In a groundbreaking artistic initiative, the Fujairah Academy of Fine Arts has unveiled the region’s first "musical road" — a 750-meter stretch at the entrance to Fujairah city that plays music as cars drive over it.
When vehicles travel over the specially engineered grooves in the road, the vibrations from their tires produce harmonious notes from Beethoven’s famous Ninth Symphony, offering drivers and passengers a one-of-a-kind auditory experience.
The project is part of the academy’s vision to integrate art into everyday life, transforming public spaces into platforms for creative expression and elevating Fujairah’s cultural identity.
Ali Obaid Al Hafiti, Director General of the Fujairah Academy of Fine Arts, stated: “This musical street reflects our belief that art should be part of daily life. It provides a unique sensory experience and transforms routine driving into a memorable moment.”
He added that the project is aligned with the academy’s mission to spread beauty and creativity across the emirate, emphasizing that music is a universal language capable of creating joy even during mundane activities like driving.
The first musical road in the world was built in Japan in 2007, and the concept has since expanded to countries such as South Korea, Denmark, the USA, and the Netherlands — where these roads have become tourist attractions.
**How does a musical road work?**
Precise grooves are carved into the road at calculated intervals. When car tires pass over them at a specific speed (typically between 40–60 km/h), they produce vibrations that create a clear and melodic tune inside the vehicle.
Besides offering a joyful experience, the road encourages drivers to maintain safe speeds to hear the full melody, contributing to traffic safety while promoting cultural tourism.
